Navigating COVID-19: Responsible Social Gathering Tips-n-Tricks

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the very basis of how we function in our society, forcing us to create a new normal that both protect ourselves and others but also allows us to engage in the true necessities of human life. As social creatures, we rely on our relationships to keep us going through hard times like these. But how do we navigate this new world when a basic necessity like socializing comes with such dangers? Here are some tips and tricks for responsibly gathering socially while also being mindful of the dangers of COVID-19.

  • Keep gatherings small

Social gatherings should be limited to 10 people or less. It’s best if gatherings are held outdoors rather than inside.

  • Wear masks

Wear a face covering and encourage your guests to do so as well, especially when you are within six feet of each other and/or indoors.

  • Keep things clean

Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily, as well as before guests arrive and after they leave. Encourage guests to utilize disinfectants like hand sanitizer or to wash their hands regularly throughout your time together.

  • Keep track of who’s attending.

It’s important to keep track of who’s attending your social gathering so that, in the event of an outbreak, contact tracing can be done to prevent the further spread of the virus. Contact tracing is required and you are expected to provide a list of attendees to the health department in case of an outbreak. • Play safe games

Avoid playing games or activities that require people to touch each other or the same items (board and card games, tag, etc). Instead, try playing games or activities that allow participants to practice social distancing such as charades or artistic activities.

  • Don’t share food

Avoid sharing food and drinks like chips, dips, and platters. Allow individuals to bring their own food or serve themselves from the food provided using disposable utensils and plates.

It’s important to recognize that the best way to avoid the spread of COVID-19 is by not hosting or attending social gatherings. Try getting creative with how you gather so that you and your friends can socialize from the comforts of home. From watching movies together over Zoom or Netflix’s party function to playing multiplayer games online, there are plenty of ways to have fun and socialize while still being safe and practicing COVID-19 preventative measures.

With everything going on in the world, it can be hard to keep yourself accountable for the health and safety of yourself and others. These six tips-n-ticks can serve as a helpful reminder on how to have a social gathering responsibly during the pandemic. We are in this together. Let’s keep each other safe, remaining supportive of one another during this difficult time.
