Take Time Before You Sign

As each fall semester comes to a close, many students and parents begin to discuss off-campus housing for the next year. The process of looking for housing can be an additional source of stress and anxiety for students, and many are under the assumption that housing is limited and individuals must start early (as early as the fall semester) to secure a residence. The fall semester serves as a time to do research and the spring semester is a time to start the search for the right fit. By waiting to sign a lease in the spring/summer months you have taken the time to figure out if you want to study aboard, who are the right roommates to live with, what your realistic budget looks like, where in the community you want to live, etc. Yes, as the spring semester draws to an end options will inevitability decrease due to leasing, but please know that there will still be options well into the summer.***

Ready to start your search? Here are some things you should do…

CSU students can stop by Off-Campus Life in the Lory Student Center, Room 274, for in-person assistance and an extensive list of apartment complexes, property management services and many other resources for life in the Fort Collins community. Don’t forget to follow Off-Campus Life on social media for updates/event reminders/important off campus living tips, etc. on TwitterFacebook, and Pinterest.

Students currently in the process of searching for housing for the 2015-2016 academic year should note the CSU Off-Campus Housing Fair will be held on Wednesday, February 10, in the newly renovated Main Ballroom of the Lory Student Center from 9 am – 4 pm. There is no cost to students or family to attend the fair.

When viewing properties, here are a few questions students may want to ask:

  • How many people are legally allowed to live in the property?
  • Are utilities included in the rent?
  • Who is responsible for yard maintenance and shoveling snow?
  • What type of security does the unit/property have?
  • Have there been any past nuisance issues? Remember that you can call Neighborhood Services to receive the nuisance history on a property: (970) 224-6046.
  • What repairs will be made to the unit before move in?

Additionally, students who are in the process of signing a lease are encouraged to stop by the Student Legal Services office, Room 284 of the Lory Student Center (970) 491-1482, to set up an appointment for a confidential, one-on-one consultation to review their lease before signing.
